Kettlebell Sport Snatch Basics Part 6

This session goes over breathing. All lifters want and need to know when to breathe during the Snatch, but thinking of when to inhale and when to exhale can become confusing. I recommend just focusing only on the exhale. The reason is that you’re pretty much guaranteed to inhale after you exhale, there’s no need to think about it.

By placing the focus on the exhale only, you’ve cut the thought process in half, allowing the breathing techniques to quickly become second nature while you lift.

You have two choices:

3 Exhales:

  1. At the backswing: *this exhale is mandatory on every rep
  2. As the bell comes out of backswing
  3. When bell comes into fixation

Supplemental exhales can be taken while resting in fixation, depending on pace.

2 Exhales:

  1. At the backswing: *this exhale is mandatory on every rep
  2. When bell comes into fixation

Supplemental exhales can be taken while resting in fixation, depending on pace.

  • Not every rep will require an extra exhale, especially in the beginning of a set, but it depends on your intended pace. For example, if you’re lifting at a 15 -16 rpm pace, you might take an extra exhale every 4 or 5 reps to help keep you relaxed.
  • Take extra exhales by feel of when they’re needed or plan them out depending on the pace.
  • Just be careful that they don’t slow you down.
  • At the end of a side or the set when the pendulum becomes shortened, power lifts are necessary to get the bell up. Using the 3-breath method is very effective here for oxygen and full-body power.
